Broad Band Dielectric Spectroscopy and its Applications

Tutorial Highlights

Dielectric phenomena play a fundamental role in many areas of modern science and technology. The dielectric spectroscopy (DS) technique occupies a special place among the numerous modern methods used in physical and chemical analysis of materials because of the extremely wide range of characteristic times (103 - 10-12 s) available with this technique to track the time evolution of dynamic processes in molecular systems. Although it does not possess the selectivity of NMR and ESR methods, it can offer important and sometimes unique information about the dynamic and structural properties of molecular systems and complements these other techniques. DS is especially sensitive to intermolecular interactions and able to monitor cooperative processes. It provides a link between the investigation - via molecular spectroscopy - of the properties of the individual constituents of the complex material and the characterization of its bulk properties. The recent successful developments of the time domain dielectric spectroscopy and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy methods have radically changed the attitude towards DS, making it an effective tool for solids and liquids investigation on macroscopic, microscopic and mesoscopic levels.

The main purpose of the Tutorial is to bring together the experts in dielectric spectroscopy, theory of dielectrics, data treatment and the users of dielectric spectroscopy in different fields of science and engineering to share their expertise with others on a fundamental level. Such tutorial presentations will elaborate on the concepts and assumptions of various theories, the details of methods used in measurements techniques (TDR, bridge measurements, transients, hole burning, etc.), the information that can be obtained from such measurements, and numerical methods and algorithms used in analysis of data to obtain the specific information from such measurements as they relate to theory. The tutorials are targeted for students but any novice in the field is welcomed. The goal is to pass the experimental legacy of this generation on to the next generation.

The tutorials will address various topics in the relevant general fields of the applications of dielectric materials microelectronics, electro-optics, communication systems, material science, food industry, petroleum and chemical industry, pharmacological and medical applications. The large number of specialists in the theory and practice of dielectric materials and dielectric measurement techniques will be encouraged to participate in the meeting.
The International Dielectric Society is sponsoring these tutorials and we wish to thank the Kia Ngai and the organizing committee of International Discussion Meeting on Relaxations in Complex Systems for making time available during their meeting session for this tutorial session.
The one day Tutorials will be organized in as 45 minutes lectures with 15 minutes for the Q&A.
