Dr. Shinian Cheng applied Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy to advance the fundamental understanding of dynamics and transport phenomena in complex materials by establishing quantitative links between molecular dynamics and thermodynamics. His work spans ionic and hydrogen-bonding systems, and dynamic polymers. He uncovered how entropy, volume, and intermolecular interactions control charge transport, dynamics and viscoelastic properties. He revealed new mechanisms of ion transport, various bonds exchange, and supramolecular dynamics, providing a unified framework that connects microscopic mechanisms to macroscopic properties in soft materials.
